Fraser Island Getaway

18/9/2017

Click heFRASER (WOW) ISLAND! With a staggered arrival on Fraser Island, Ben, Laura, Kerry and myself and family meet at the Wildhorse Mountain    servos for a 0730 departure, we headed off for our Fraser adventure. We had a short break at Rainbow for a fuel and food top up before heading off to the barge and with no   Inskip casualty or stars (from our group at least) we made the next barge to the Island. We have arrived on the island and started our trek up 75 mile beach, only to find an unfortunate trawler casually parked on the beach, which enticed us to take photos. Kerry even made the news taking photos inside the exclusion zone. Shortly after we headed off again, only to pass the famous SS Maheno wreck and more photos. Off we headed again on our last stretch to camp at Waddy Point passing through Indian head with success and no issues, we arrived at camp around 2pm, set up camp by 4 with some additions brought up in the newly converted zombie trailer.  Did someone say DRINK! The next morning we headed off to what was called a hidden gem and being a Fraser virgin we didn’t know what to expect driving through a burnt out landscape a dirty puddle and BOOM, Platypus Bay you have to see it to believe it. We spent the day here with lots and games (Thanks Kerry) and some drone whale watching thanks to Pete. Unfortunately the time had come to leave this little slice of paradise and on the journey back we found some wombat holes Ben 1st go, Kerry not so lucky, Mick lost count, me 1st go and so on.   After that we headed back to camp. Did someone say DRINK! Today was the day for Sandy cape and something they called Nkgala Rocks, now that was fun with only 1 recovery we were not there long and moving again to the Sandy cape. Once we arrived a few of went for a walk up to the lighthouse which was to be a challenge for some, when we     returned to the bottom we split from the group and trekked through to find some graves from the original light house caretaker and some old war trenches. After that we went back to the beach to find that someone turned the Hilux into a Lowlux. Bugger another victim buried, Back off to camp again. Did someone say DRI Today was rest day as such, a small group went for a drive the rest of the group went and checked out Champagne pools another Fraser gem, and a very little hidden beach were Anna continued chasing Anemones. Back to camp again for Party night to celebrate some birthdays and kids games night which they all had a blast, thanks Ben and Laura for you hard work putting it together. I might have a DRINK tonight. Today saw a trek through the inland, so we headed down the beach and checked out Eli Creek for a quick stroll through the water, then off to happy valley for a snack before heading inland towards Lake Garawongera, then moved on to Lake McKenzie for late lunch and a swim. Although getting there was a mission as Cornwell’s break road was very soft and extremely chewed up by holiday traffic, we had another recovery and a unfortunate slight bumper scratch on Kerry’s new front bar (whoops). On the way back to camp we had a quick stop at central station before our night drive back to Waddy point with our Christmas tree convoy. Really need a DRINK! Today was anything day, some went fishing and swimming other tried there hand sliding down sand dunes and others well felt the need to get buried in the sand we all joined up again for some group photos and some more droning, but not before Mick, Ben and took off with the Jeep which leighanne didn’t like, so she and Laura chased us in Ben’s Cruiser lot of laughs had by all. Later that evening we headed off to the little hidden beach for some wheel up photos and a small celebration. This being the last night for some we headed back to camp for a well-deserved DRINK! So with half the group packed up, off they headed home. With only Ben, Laura and my family left we spent the day back at Champagne pools for a swim and some lunch, later that afternoon we found out that Mick had some issues with his trailer on the way home, after a quick fix with his mechanical prowess was on the move again. Later that night Laura and I went and took some night photos with a short photography lesson we got some great photos. Since this being our last night, let’s celebrate with a DRINK! We all packed up and started our journey home, but not without the official stop at Eurong bakery on the way home. Since it was high tide and not being able to tackle Hook point we headed down the inland track to meet up with the barge for our final stretch. What an awesome week, this being my first time to Fraser Island I can say that I will most certainly be back and I highly recommend that everyone should go a least once, but with so much to see and do, it won’t be enough.
