Recent 4WD Vehicle Rollovers
(Advisory to 4WD QLD Clubs)

Over the past few weeks 4WD QLD had become aware of several 4WD vehicle rollovers being
reported on social media sites.

Earlier this week I was informed of the death of a member of the public that had occurred over the
weekend at Landcruiser Mountain 4WD Park. This has left a wife, young daughter, family and wider
community mourning the loss of their loved one, after their vehicle rolled whilst traversing difficult
terrain. I offer my sincere condolences to the loved ones left behind grappling with this tragic event.

This is a very sad occurrence that as the president of 4WD QLD, a member of a Queensland 4WD
club and as a 4WD owner and driver highlights the possible dangers of our chosen recreation. I urge
you all to take some time to think about this when out there four wheel driving to ensure you are
taking every possible precaution to reduce the chance of things going wrong.

In the first driver awareness course I attended when joining a 4WD Club they provided all the
participants with a basic list of do and don'ts regarding driving and recovery techniques, along with
theory regarding vehicle maintenance and driving higher center of gravity of 4WD vehicles if offroad
conditions. I think it is important we all regularly review our training notes and complete
training courses to improve on our 4WD knowledge and techniques.

4WD QLD is creating a training course to educate members around correct trip risk management
procedures to help clubs keep members abreast of current laws and expectations, which ultimately
will help make club trips safer. We have also recently rolled out the more advanced 4WD and
recovery courses to complement the basic course previously offered as we see this as a very
important part of our offer to our member clubs.

If your club does not have an accredited training officer, we have developed a solution so you can
also have access to accredited training for your club members. We have widened the scope of our
insurance cover to allow for paid trainers.

This now means we can pay an existing 4WD QLD accredited trainer to conduct training courses for
clubs who do not have a training officer. The cost of training will be slightly higher to cover the cost
of the trainer but this is a small price to pay for access to the training that was previously unavailable
to your club. Please contact our training officer (Tony Collins) if your club requires a course to be
run.

Our new web site includes a calendar where all training course dates are posted. It is possible to
attend these courses if all the positions are not already filled. Again contact our training officer (Tony
Collins) to check availability.

So in a nut shell......

STOP and THINK about all possible outcome BEFORE attempting any challenge or recovery,

Yours in safe 4WDing,
Shane Rose

2013 Fraser Island Clean Up

19/6/2013

Moreton Districts Off-Road club was one of the participating clubs in the 2013 Fraser Island Clean Up.  Below is a press release from Four Wheel Drive Queensland.

A good time was had by all who attended and we would like to thank the organisers and sponsors for another great event.

2013 Fraser Island Clean Up - Media Release - Four Wheel Drive Queensland

The first weekend in June marked the 13th annual Fraser Island Clean up. The idea to hold such a large scale clean up, on arguably Australia’s most iconic tourist island, was conceived by two mates sitting around a camp fire sharing their 4wding experiences and love of the outdoors. One of the people present that was night was Jeff Chase. Since then Jeff and his wife Nola have become the driving force behind this annual event in collaboration with Four Wheel Drive QLD and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services.
The 2013 Fraser Island Clean Up attracted over 290 volunteers from 19 four wheel drive clubs across Queensland. This year’s event found that in addition to the general rubbish and marine debris washed ashore by the tides, a significant amount of collected rubbish was washed ashore by the relentless weather systems that have battered the Fraser Coast (and much of Queensland) this year.

4WD Qld conservation officer Mark Haeusler said the event was once again a success but was astounded by the amount of rubbish collected.

"The area cleaned up by the volunteers was most of the Eastern shore of the island therefore a lot of flotsam and jetsam collected consisted of plastic such as netting, bottles, fish fluoro tubes and incredibly, thousands of toothbrushes".

"Approximately 50 cubic metres of rubbish (985 garbage bags) was collected in just 6 hours which is horrifying but instantly we had comments from tourism operators who frequent the island how much of a difference it made."

In a first for the event, the 2013 Fraser Island Clean Up saw volunteers also concentrate on targeting invasive Cassia and Lantana problem areas that were identified by QPWS rangers.
"Fraser Island is a listed World Heritage Area and 4WD Qld are proud to assist in helping to keep it clean and weed-free so that future visitors can see its true beauty." Said Mark

The event is reliant upon volunteers with the backing of corporate sponsorship. Without the people donating time, money and products this event would not exist. If you'd like to be part of next year's Four Wheel Drive Queensland’s Fraser Island Clean Up event seewww.4wdqld.com.au
